Opening acts Fall of Troy and Direngrey took the stage before headlining Deftones rocked the house at the Twin Cities Club, the Myth Sunday June 17.
The first song played by Deftones was the duet originally recorded with Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer), "Passenger". Deftones vocalist and guitarist, Chino Moreno, belted out the song solo, performing Keenan's parts, too. A Mankato native, Zachary Chavez, said that he has seen the band seven times total, including a time that Keenan was there too, but this was the first show that he had witnessed the band perform "Passenger".
"Maynard wouldn't do it," said Chavez, whose also seen the band perform overseas in Germany.
The Fall of Troy was the first band to perform. They are a three-piece group out of Seattle. The guitarist and vocalist of the band, Thomas Erak, shredded though riffs and solos with super-human speed. The band had a street team promoting after the show, handing out sampler cds. Erak had some words for the crowd gathered on the floor of the Myth.
"What's up Minneapolis," said Erak, "You guys need to start some crazy shit up here! (twirling his finger toward the front row)."
Direngrey played their set next. They are a five-piece group from Japan. The band carried a high-energy stage presence, and a gruesome visual appeal. The vocalist screamed, sang melodically, danced, violently and spasmatically convulsed, and even spit blood.
Deftones gathered the largest crowd to the floor by far. Bodies were pressed together like sardines to get close to the world-famous act. They played in front of a large lighted screen, that displayed various images.
The Deftones are a five-piece Grammy award-winning act from Sacramento. They have toured worldwide, and have released 7 full length albums of which include chronologically: (Like) Linus, Adrenaline, Around the Fur, White Pony, Deftones, B-Sides & Rarities and Saturday Night Wrist.
The line to get into the show was round the block. There was a separate line, and door, for people who wanted to get the ticket upon arrival. Security personnel at the Myth warned the guests that they may not have any digital cameras, sharp objects or weapons of any kind including mace. Security marked those 21 with a "C" in permanent marker and fastened a wristband to those person's arms. Security also patted guests down before entrance to the club.
