Live review of All That Remains at the Croatian Cultural Centre, Feb. 06, 2007

At first when I was approached to review ‘ATR”, the wrong initials,. had me assuming I was going to an Atari Teenage Riot gig.. Hey, in the words of Liam Lynch - whatever!.

When one enters the realms of a venue with “reviewing “in mind, one also has to take into consideration, the logistics of waste-dodging. Then, submerge yourself into a mosh pit to endure a Ju-jitsu –like bombardment of metal militia tactics and you’re good to go. To the hospital.

Welcome to the new mosh pit. No stage diving (not permitted), just a good ‘ol boy hillbilly-locomotive maelstrom. In case you didn’t know, eye- gouging is the new arm flailing. I find it fascinating how I get the @&#%knocked out of me in order to get that “Classic” picture. I just figured I am taking one for the team. Team Rock N’ Roll that is.

Melodic Metal core monstrosities – All That Remains have made their presence known on this chilly Tuesday evening and the crowd has no inhibitions in regards to soaking up the sin. Front man Phil Labonte entered stage center, almost toppling the monitors to the ecstatic delight of the youngsters.

The dual six-string sting ofco-founder Oli Herbert and Mike Martin were right on the studio money as they performed every lick as heard on their latest Prosthetic/Razor& Tie release The Fall of Ideals. Nice change from the overabundance of “artsy’ metal bands who purposely slide the improv gloves on to shine in the musicianship dept. Regardless the ATR camp was in full swing for the crowd of 800 or so.

Highlights came in the form of “This Calling” (also featured on the SAW III soundtrack), “The Air That I Breathe” as well as “We Stand”. Also debuting on this tour, is former Diecast drummer Jason Costa, who replaced Shannon Lucas a couple of months prior to this show.

One of three opening acts – Misery Signals (not to be confused with another Miserable group) wooed the crowd as they showcased tracks from their latest Ferret Music release Mirrors.

Overall, the bands were squeaky, the sound was clean, the pit was dirty and as always, the raffish security…was filthy.
